Book Review: "Tarikshir" by Khayaal Patel is a fantasy drama adventure thriller set during the early history of the British Rule in India. It extracts mythological references from Ramayan and from the aftermath of the battle between Ram and Ravan. The entire 330 pages is a masterpiece as we find many plots and sub-plots contributing to a beautiful narrative. There is a thrill, reference, mystery, truth, evil and even Game of Thrones inspired villains but more Indian in taste and flavor. This book calls for a perfect movie plot should it one day ever get adapted on screen.

Rudra is the heir to the throne of Devangarh, a Rajput kingdom hiding many secrets lost in time but always lurking in the shadows to reveal itself. The British see this kingdom as their only obstacle in gaining complete control over Indian territory. The valiant Rajputs of Devangarh are fierce warriors led by their King and Rudra's father Raja Ravindra. We find ourselves pushed towards a battle in the very first few chapters and Rudra's capabilities as future King is put on test. Can he become the fierce warrior his father dreams for? Or will he succumb to his mother's side of love and compassion? Is there a more humane side to this young prince who wants peace for his people and bows down towards the British against the wishes of an entire generation of his Rajput ancestors? Who are the Sons of Hanuman?

Just when we are gearing up to find answers to these questions, Raja Ravindra allegedly gets murdered one night while on camp before facing the British army. The incident makes Rudra go blind with rage who leaves no stone unturned in discovering the killer. Rudra is at a point where he doubts even the most trusted advisors of his father; his teacher of arts in combat, the vizier and even the erstwhile King's brother who was banished from the kingdom and who later on formed a rebel group of his own hiding secrets that Rudra is yet to uncover. The investigation that young prince Rudra embarks on makes him realize that there is more at stake than only a murder - powers and mysteries from otherworldly beings suddenly flare up into welcoming a more worthy and powerful being of evil. Is there a weapon to stop this evil and the world from destruction? Who is the mastermind behind all these conspiracies? Is Rudra alone in his quest? Who can he trust and who loses their lives for the greater good?

Such a plot and storyline is sure to create a lasting impact on the readers especially those who are inspired by mystery and mythology. This book is recommended and praised for its concept which leads to a satisfying end. There are more than enough twist-in-the-tale moments and yet we can conclude that there are further upcoming volumes waiting to entertain readers as Rudra takes on his next adventure.
